We took advantage of having 5 days off, Wednesday went on a road trip to the UP. We stayed at AmericInn in Silver Springs, which is only only 4 miles from the Porcupine Mountains. We had a suite with a lakeview from the living area window and a pool view from the bedroom window.
After we arrived, we heard Eagles chirping and saw 3 immatures in a nearby tree.
We also saw momma Merganser with her chicks hitching a ride on her back.
We found a couple of invasive plants as well, Largeleaf Lupine and Soapwort.
After we got settled in our room, we took off to the mountains. After stopping at the visitor center and getting some fabulous information from Belle, we went to Lake of the Clouds Scenic Area. It was so beautiful and peaceful.
After getting a few pictures of the sunset at the hotel, (which happened around 10ish), we called it a night.
Thursday, we spent the day in the Porkies. We hiked the trails that took us to Manabezho, Manido, and Nawadaha Falls.
The Overlooked Falls were ok, but not nearly as impressive as the other falls today. Although, we would have enjoyed it more if it weren't for the biting bugs.
We hiked to the Summit Peak and enjoyed the scenery from the observation tower.
Friday we hiked the 4.6 mile round trip along the Government Peak Trail. It was an enjoyable, nice, quiet, woodsy, kind of hike to the waterfall.
After our hike, we checked out a spot to look for Yooperlites. We picked up a few rocks and took them to the room to see if any of them glowed under the black light. No such luck.
But we were lucky when we got back to the hotel and saw a Bald Eagle perched in a tree near the parking area.
We had a delicious pizza from Porkies Outpost then sat on the shores of Lake Superior and waited for dusk to look for Yooperlites and we found some!!
Saturday we ventured away from the Porkies. Our first stop was Victoria Dam and Falls. It was quite disappointing to find there was only a trickle of water.
Bond Falls on the other hand, was awesome. We spent several hours, hiking around the falls and enjoying the scenery.
We saw our first Wood Turtle and several other cool species of animals and plants as we checked out the falls from front, rear, and side views.
After a picnic lunch, we stopped at Konteka Black Bear Restaurant and had a yummy Grasshopper. We had hoped to see the bears, but they were a no show.
Our last waterfall of the day was Bonanza Falls. Quite a peaceful, pretty spot.
Sunday, we checked out the beach before making our trek home to Camp Chewy. It has been a fabulous mini vacation!
