Sunday, we got the week started with a nice stroll, taking in nature on this windy day.
Monday, the work week out started as an exciting one. We got to help measure and collar a wolf, a 2 year old female. She was a beauty, weighing in at 65 lbs. The song Little Red Riding Hood was playing through my head. Awooh!!
On our way to the wolf capture, we saw this cool doe eating water lilies.
We got a few nature shots in while hanging around with the Wolf team.
The afternoon of armchair birding was quite entertaining.
Tuesday, we spent the day going around to different culverts measuring water flow.
As we were finishing up, we saw turkey poults fly in a tree. We never knew they could fly when they were this young. You live and learn.
We watched a mom and her 2 fawns as they ran through the brush.
We also had an eagle flyover that was carrying a pike. What a catch!
A juvie eagle had been perched in a nearby tree taking it all in.
We saw several birds, including the Song Sparrow singing its heart out.
A Red-winged Blackbird looked like she was playing hopscotch, jumping from lily pad to lily pad.
Wednesday, we went to a meeting with the big wigs. After listening to the presentation, (or story), we realize the last few weeks of water data collection has been for a good cause.
After the presentation, we went on a tour of the refuge, then came back and had lunch.
Thursday morning a Blanding's Turtle walked through the campground. Poor turtle was being eaten alive by mosquitos. These mosquitos are horrendous!
We spent most of the day riding in the marsh master. The marsh master is being used to try to get the Little Yellow River back in it's original channel. It was a fun day, splashing around, pushing through the vegetation, and finding some cool critters along the way.
On the way back, we saw a couple of Black Terns.
We spent our day off on Friday, getting some shopping in, getting a haircut, and getting our bellies full at the Chinese buffet.
Lauren took a walk when we got back. I had had more than enough harassment from the mosquitos this week and stayed inside and took a nap.
This afternoon, we sat our chairs between two thermacells and enjoyed a little bit of outdoor time.
Saturday, we attempted to walk the trails. When we were bombarded with mosquitos, we aborted the mission and got in the truck and rode around.
Every time we lowered the window to take photos, the mosquitos swarmed in.
The afternoon was spent at Lake Martha Days Festival. We had good food, good drinks, good music and good company.
