We had a rainy Sunday for our refuge tour. We didn't mind the rain and neither did the cranes. The Crane Circus was on when we went to the North Gautier Unit. We saw about 18 cranes while we were touring around.
It appears the Fox Squirrel is winning the feeder battle. It has chewed the edge of the plastic feeder to get to the corn under the metal wire and screen. He sure was enjoying the corn when we checked the Gautier Pen.
We saw about 8 cranes on the South Gautier Unit and some other cool things before we headed to Crossroads after we got the news about Dustin's passing. R.I.P. Dustin.
When we got back to the refuge on Tuesday, we got our stuff ready for our next day road trip. We are pulling out at 0700 going to Choctaw NWR.
Wednesday was a very long day. We along with Jeff and Dave went to Choctaw NWR to cut grass. After driving 2 1/2 hours one way, we unloaded the mowers at 9:30 a.m. and were back on the road by 1:30 p.m. When the rain started, I was close to a shed. Lauren on the other hand, was not so lucky. He was soaked by the time he finally got under the roof of a kiosk.
We made a lunch stop on the way back at a Chinese restaurant in Waynesboro. This is the first buffet that we have eaten since before the pandemic and it was good!!
Thursday was a laid back kind of day. We replaced a crane feeder that had been damaged by the critters on the South Gautier Unit. The only cranes we saw was a 4 crane flyover.
A check on the Dougie family was a little worrisome when we saw mom and the twins in the pasture, but no Dougie. We finally saw him across the road foraging in a yard. He must have needed a break from the kids.
The pollinators were enjoying the fresh blooms alongside the roads of the North Gautier Unit.
When we returned to camp crane, we did a little bit of armchair birding.
We wrapped up the week working in the visitor center Friday and Saturday.
Friday pics from the native garden.
Saturday pictures from around the visitor center.
