MSCNWR - 5-15-22 - 5-21-22

Our Orchid Safari on Sunday, had plenty of orchid finds, just not the Calopogon multiflorus kind.

While looking for orchids, we were distracted by a very determined Pileated Woodpecker.

Shortly after entering the North Gautier Unit, we saw our favorites, Banana, Coconut, and their buds.  They looked a little bit disappointed that we didn't fill the feeder.

We did not have any luck finding colts today.  The Dougie family was no where to be seen.

We saw Jabba and her mate fly from the road near the Gautier Pen then circle around.  They had the colts hid in the grass.

We saw about 20 cranes while we were in the North Gautier Unit, the only photogenic ones were our buddies and their friends.

Sunday Pics:

Monday, we met with Lloyd to try and resolve bookstore issues.  We had a little bit of progress.  We tagged 31 DGFs while the Interns were in the field.  We helped the Interns collect 60 frogs from the tanks, tag 88, then released 177 at sunset.  We still have a dry pond, which is good for driving the 1 mile in, but not so good for the frogs.

Tuesday, after getting our Dees Trail walk in, we tagged 39 frogs while the Interns went through camera cards from last week.  This afternoon, we helped the Interns and Jeremy, who is filling in for the next 3 weeks as the project leader,  collect 53 more frogs from the tanks.  We spent the afternoon tagging 76 frogs.

Tuesday Pics:

Wednesday, we collected and tagged 42 DGFs.  We made another version of the Dough Boy Deer Buster and fixed up 5 feeders.  The only pictures we took today were with our phone cameras.  This frog season is wearing us out.

Wednesday Pics:

I spent most of the day Thursday trying to get the Clover register system working in the bookstore.  No such luck.

Lauren helped bio with the frogs, catching and tagging 30 DGFs.  Finally, it appears to be slowing down just a bit.

We went with Bio and Jeremy to release 179 frogs at sunset.  We have released over 60% of the frogs.

Thursday Pics:

Friday and Saturday we took a much needed break and went to the Rez for a weekend visit with Jerri and Rick.  We stopped by LeFleur's Bluff State Park, enjoyed a picnic lunch, did some hiking and picture taking.
