Spring is in the air and we're on the road for our Spring Fling 2021. We packed up and pulled out Tuesday morning. We traveled a whopping 93 miles to Jackson County RV Park in Vancleave, Ms. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The sites are spacious, and all of them are empty, except for the one we parked on. And, as a bonus, we were given a key to the gate. Nothing like being in a gated community.
We took a ride to the Sandhill Crane Refuge, and of course, along the way, we checked on a couple of Crane hot spots. We found Dougie and his bride, 1510, with their new hatchling. So, stinking, cute!!
The Rock Hill family were doing good. The youngster is almost as big as it's parents. It is at that stage where, it is so ugly, it is cute.
We had a spectacular air show by a Red-tailed Hawk, a Broad-winged Hawk, and an Osprey while hiking the Dees Trail. The little guy, aka Broad-winged Hawk, did not appear to be intimidated at all. We aren't sure if the Osprey just happened to get caught up in this or was the referee.
After enjoying a lot of Sandhill Crane cuteness and a Hawk dispute, we relaxed at our nice, quiet, campsite. Ferny Kat joined us outside for a while. It goes without saying, we have another Ferny Kat approved campsite.
Wednesday, we spent the morning processing the many photos that we took yesterday. then we took a ride to some of our favorite birding spots from Graveline Beach to Ocean Springs Beach. On our way out of the campground, we sighted a Red-headed Woodpecker. It is so nice to see them again.
On our excursion, we found plenty of critters and such to photograph.
We made another look at the Dougie family before heading back to camp for the evening. Again, that little chick is so sticking cute!!
We all sat outside this afternoon, watching a couple of Red-headed Woodpeckers and a Broad-winged Hawk. Tomorrow, is Orchid Safari day!!
Thursday is National Earth Day. We met with Bill, (the Orchid Guru), Scott, and Erin for an Orchid Safari in the South Gautier Unit. We walked for hours looking for the rare Many-flowered Grass Pinks. Once we found one, we found plenty of them. Needless to say, we found plenty other pretties that kept our interest until finding the Many-flowered Grass Pinks.
One of the pretties we found was a Night Hawk sleeping on a log. Good thing, Eagle Eye, (aka Lauren), saw him before waking over the log the bird was sleeping on.
It was nice to be part of the search for a rare, beautiful, magenta colored orchid at one of our favorite places, on Earth Day.
To top off the day, we met Judy and Terry for dinner at Woody's, for our birthday celebration. It was so good to sit around and talk with them. We need to do this more often!
