Our 39th Anniversary Eve was moving day. We traveled 104 miles in a northerly direction to Falcon State Park. We are on site number 214 for the next few days. This is the kind of camping we did way back in the day. We have some woods nestling up to the campsite and no street lights. A nice, quiet, laid back, kind of place.
We arrived at the campground and found out the water is out. Not a problem, they came by shortly after we arrived and filled up our fresh water holding tank.
We took a drive around the campground to get our bearings, getting a few bird pics along the way. This lake was made by damming up the Rio Grande River.
You would think going north the temperature would cool down. Not!! It was 93 degrees today. I have to say, that it is better than the 30's we had last week. The heaters are in storage and the fan and a/c are running.
After belling up to some baby back ribs, we took a stroll around the campground. We stopped and bird watched at one of the camp host sites. We saw a lot of pretty birds and a rabbit.
On our stroll back to camp, we enjoyed the sunset reflections in the sky and the full moon.
When we got back, Ferny Kat was ready for some more outside time. This is definitely a Ferny Cat Approved Campground.
Friday, Happy Anniversary to us!
Ferny Kat is getting into this bird watching thing. As we were cooking breakfast outside, she spotted an Olive Sparrow for us.
We took a 2 mile stroll after breakfast doing our birding thing. We saw a couple of Lovie Dovie Eurasian Collard Doves making out on the wire. Love is in the air!!
We took a ride to Roma Bluffs Observation Deck. As I was enjoying looking at the Rio Grande River, Lauren informed me that I was looking at Mexico on the other side of the river. It was a pretty awesome view.
We stopped by Salineno NWR. It is a 2 1/2 acre refuge which is the smallest refuge we have ever visited. The 2 1/2 acres had a lotta of draw. We sat at the volunteer site and bird watched for over an hour. It may be small in size, but it is big in the bird species count.
We took a 2 1/2 mile stroll when we got back to camp looking for the Cactus Wren. We found it, along with Bob Whites and a Great Horned Owl.
After our wonderful steaks on the grill meal, we finally fired up the propane fire pit that we have been hauling around since we left home. We heard the soothing call of the Common Pauraques then the howling of the Coyotes. This is the most remote place we have been on this trip.
As we were enjoying our campfire, we heard a rustle in the brush, and low and behold, 9 Javelinas came by to check out our campfire. After seeing Peccary porn and having one of them lay down near the picnic table. We turned the fire out and went in for the night.
We were slow, getting out and about on Saturday. As we were lazing around camp, we were serenaded by a Black-throated Sparrow.
We also had a White Pelican flyover.
We finally went for a walk around noon. As we were taking pictures of birds at the camp host site, we found out there was a Red-billed Pigeon in the park. Mike, the camp host was very excited abut this rare sighting. We went to the area and got a few pics before it flew off.
We took a walk along the shoreline, watching the fishermen, and found another first species for us, an American Pipit.
After our 3.6 mile walk, we came back to camp and relaxed while Ferny Kat played in the water dripping from the camper ac.
Sunday, we got another 3.6 miles hiking on the nature trails . The birds must have been taking the sabbath today. We saw a few, but nothing spectacular.
We took Amber for a spin today. We enjoyed our wind therapy, riding on the country roads, stopping every now and then, to see birds. When we got back, we loaded Amber up for our departure tomorrow.
I think this is Ferny Kat's favorite campground this trip. She people watches, bird watches, and Javelina watches.
We sat outside until after dark. It was quit enjoyable until a a Javelina did a walk through spraying off his stinky, skunk smell. Needless to say, we are in for the night.
We made a last minute walk to check out the camp host birding site before we pulled out Monday. We got soaked on our way back in the rain and howling wind. We decided to stay put another day. No need in driving when you don't have to.
