Magnolia Beach - 3-4-21 -3-6-21

We took a northeasterly path on our 105 mile move on Thursday.  We are camping on Magnolia Beach.  The only ass in the water is the back of the camper with the waves splashing under it.  We did get our toes on the beach, but we had our shoes on.  It's a little too cool to expose the toes.

Lauren planned for us to be camped on Magnolia Beach for our anniversary.  After the icy weather, we got delayed for a week.  Not a problem, we are having the 2nd celebration of our 39th Anniversary!!

When we got set up, Ferny Kat was ready to check out her new spot.  Although she is skeptical, we think she might like this place, after all, she has came out a couple of times today.

We figured the Sandhill Cranes had gone north by now. We figured wrong.  We saw 5 Sandhill Cranes in a field today. It was nice to get in our Sandhill Crane fix!

We also spotted a beautiful Krider's Red-tailed Hawk perched on a wire.

After a trip to Wally World, we took a stroll along the beach.  Then came back and relaxed watching the tide come in.  The rolling waves were mesmerizing.  

A sand crab was not enjoying the waves as much as we were.  He was having a hard time being splashed around by the waves.

We watched a gorgeous sunset after dinner tonight.   It has been a great day for us beach bums!

Friday, we took a ride to Goose Island State Park.  Before we got to the park, we took a detour to the Big Tree area to see if there were any cranes there.  There was. The Crane Whisperers found a bunch of Sandhill Cranes and 9 Whooping Cranes. 

 

One of the Sandhill Cranes decided to show off his dance moves.  Such an elegant thing to watch.

We were skeptical about camping at the state park because of the reviews of low limbs.  After our cruise through, we would not have a problem with most of the campsites here.  As a matter of fact, the water sites were awesome.

We enjoyed watching the dolphins in a feeding frenzy in the bay.   

There were a lot of people fishing on the pier, the banks, and in the water.  We almost turned around about half way as we were walking on the fishing pier, but we are glad we didn't.  We, or actually Lauren, spotted a stingray in the water.

We spotted a couple more Whooping Cranes way across the bay.

We walked the nature trail then went back to the Big Tree area for our picnic lunch.  The sandhill cranes were still there and a couple of Whoopers.  While we were eating, we had a 2 Whooper flyby.  Awesome.

We had planned to go to Aransas NWR tomorrow, but we changed our minds.  We checked it our on our way back to camp.  We didn't see as many birds as we saw a few months ago, but did see a few shorebirds and lots of alligators.  

We saw the usual pair of Whoopers in the distance while we were on the observation deck.

Before we could open the door of the camper, we heard Ferny Kat hollering.  She was ready to get her toes in the sand.  She is getting into this beach bum life.

Friday Pics:

The wave action picked up Saturday morning.  It was very relaxing to hear the waves crash, which is probably why I slept until 8:30 am.  

We all enjoyed a leisure morning of doing nothing.  After living up to the beach bum status, we did the touristy thing and rode around checking out the area before going to Port Lavaca to stock up on fuel and stuff.

When we got back to camp, the wave action had slowed and the people action had picked up.  It is amazing that we are enjoying the beach without commercial businesses and it is free!

  

We found pretty Texas Paintbrush blooms on our stroll at camp today,  We haven't seen many blooms since the freeze. 

Ferny Kat was a lot more cautious today with all the people and dogs.  She finally came outside right around sunset.

Wilderness Lake RV Park/Lake Corpus Christi - 3-2-21 -3-3-21

We watched the pigs going after the bird feed scatter Tuesday morning before leaving Falcon State Park.  We left the U.S./Mexico border and traveled 149 miles in a northerly direction.  We are staying at Wilderness Lakes RV Resort in Mathis, Texas.   We are on site #30 for the next couple of days.

  

The campground has a nice 2 mile nature trail, several lakes, and water that we don't have to boil.  Ferny Kat gave an ok approval for this campground.  It has a little too many people and too many vocal dogs for our liking, but a nice place for a day or two.

We took a walk along the 2 mile nature trail and then some, enjoying nature along the way.  We enjoyed our walk around the lakes watching the waterfowl and yard art around the ponds.

We saw plenty of bird species on our walk, including a Red-tailed Hawk, a Caracara, and a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Tuesday Pics:

Wednesday we drove less than a mile to Lake Corpus Christi State Park.  There were a lot of campers in the campgrounds, but not very many people on the trails or around the lake.  

After riding around the lake, we walked to the bird blind.  We saw a lot of pretty birds, including one of our favorites, the Green Jay.

We checked out the castle/aka the original state park office.  It had a lot of pretty cool views of the lake. 

 

We enjoyed our walk on the Catfish Lake Trail, meandering through the mesquite trees and around the lake.

We ate our picnic lunch sitting at a table near the lake.

After we got back, Ferny Kat bailed out of the camper for some outside time.  While I did a few chores,  Lauren did the Ferny Kat watch.  The noisiest thing at camp today was all the birds singing.
